Glitz and Glam: Holiday Dresses

Christmas commercials started running before Halloween, and everyone wants to get into the holiday spirit already, but I'm still actually in Thanksgiving mode.  It's feeling like fall and I'm absolutely loving it, BUT like it or not... this is the time when you need to start thinking about holiday dresses.

It's like Murphy's law - when you go shopping the day before an event for a party dress, you'll have a hard time finding anything... so by being prepared, and keeping an eye out for pretty dresses when you're out and about in November means that you'll find THE perfect dress, with plenty of time to spare.

What I really want this year is sparkle.  I said it last year and ended up in a black dress... this year, I'm on the hunt for glitz and glam.  Here are a few that I've rounded up online...

New Years Eve Sparkle

Sparkle comes in so many different forms, I had to break these finds into a few separate categories - geometric beading, all over sequins, and Gatsby inspired sparkle.

The geometric beaded dresses were so "cool girl" - they skimmed the body with shift style silhouettes, and in my mind seem a little more transitional... even though they have head to toe sparkle, they seem like something that you could wear even in warmer months...

The all over sequin dresses are so classic for the holiday... the black or deep blue would be amazing for a corporate Christmas party, and the one shoulder and gold sequin dress would be amazing on NYE.

And perhaps my favorite... the Gatsby inspired dresses - so fun!  I LOVE the beaded tassles on the short black strapless number (how fun would that be to dance in??), and the copper beading that has the look of flames is sexy and fun while still being ladylike.

What do you think??  Any favorite dresses in the bunch??

I Heart Booty

Not what you were expecting to read about this morning??  Sorry... I just had the urge to write about my love of booty... errr... booties I should say. Get your minds out of the gutter!

I wasn't a believer when girls first started wearing ankle boots several years back - hard to believe, coming from someone who owns several pairs and several styles now, but I love them, and I think it's clear that everyone else loves them too. Yep, booties are here to stay, since they are quite literally everywhere... there are booties for a night out, booties for a casual date, booties appropriate for work, and booties dedicated to play time.

I've rounded up my favorites from each category... and there are 9 categories... I should add that I LIMITED myself to 9.  Originally I had 14!

From left to right:

TOP ROW:
Ladylike Booties: with a streamlined heel, these booties from JCrew are totally office appropriate and would look pulled together and lady like with cropped trousers, or a pencil skirt.
Biker Booties: I've been on the hunt for a great pair of biker-esque booties.  How great would these be with black leggings and a long tunic-y sweater during the winter.  Perfect for rainy weather, and a little tough.
Caged Booties: Sexy thang! Likely not office appropriate, but great for weekend and evening wear. THESE boots were made for walking (figuratively... of course)

MIDDLE ROW:
"Everywhere" Booties: I call them everywhere booties because you could pretty much wear them anywhere.  To dinner, to work, or to a casual event.  The heel dresses things up a bit, but won't seem fussy in a situation where everyone else is wearing flip flops.
Going out Booties: Too hot to trot... perfect for a night of dancing, and is it me, or are the gold accents what MAKES these??
Playtime Booties: Channel your inner Pocahontas. These are great weekend boots - fun for a night at the movies or casual dinner.  Also great for chasing kiddos and running errands since I bet they're as comfy as a pair of slippers.

BOTTOM ROW:
Western Booties: My favorite pair of booties have a bit of a western flair to them and I'm on the hunt for a replacement actually.  I find that the dip along the shaft of the boot (is that the correct technical term) is super flattering around the ankle, and these look great with all skirts and dresses.
Flat Booties: Running around for errands, or holiday shopping?  Invest in a cool pair of flat boots.  Easy to take off in the dressing room, and comfy enough to tromp around all day.  These boots actually ARE made for walking... literally.
Wild Booties: Meow.  I mean these are just amazing.  With an all black outfit???  So SOO good.

Fall Capes

Happy first week of fall!!

What better way to welcome my favorite season - full of Pumpkin Spice Lattes and crisp sunny weather - than with a little fashion inspiration around one of my favorite fall trends...

The Cape!
I LOVE the classic east coast feel of the cape... so essentially "Ralph Lauren".  Totally fabulous and equestrian, right?? It looks like you just hopped off your horse, and are running inside for a steaming cup of apple cider.

Aside from being a chic little layer, they are possibly the easiest way to look pulled together on a cool day. Pull on a pair of jeans and riding boots and you're ready to go!

I love the hooded version to keep the hair dry and frizz free on foggy mornings, as much as I love the lighter version where your arms are exposed.

How cute does this look with black tights and ankle boots??

And of course, plaid is just a classic... this hunter green is just AMAZING!

The lighter knit versions are also awesome - one of my favorite layering pieces is a dark grey cape I bought 3 years ago.  It's gotten more use than half the things in my closet!

And of course, you can never go wrong with classic black... this heavy wool version is perfect for late fall when it's REALLY chilly.

With capes on the mind, I've pulled together a few favorites...

The first row - the classic neutral cape...

The second row - the slouchier, lighter cape for layering...

The third row - the statement cape...

Moschino Cheap Chic coat / Duro olowu, $1,795 / Msgm / Ralph Lauren Blue Label alpaca poncho / Cashmere cape / Lauren Ralph Lauren plaid cape coat, $350 / Coast wool cape, $310 / Patrizia pepe, $290 / Coat, $120 / Dorothy Perkins cape coat / Ralph lauren / Ralph Lauren military cape coat

So, what's your take on the fall cape?  Do you love them as much as I do??

Happy Shopping!

Powder Pink Winter Coat

I need a new coat like I need another hole in my head.  Which is to say, I don't need a new coat, BUT... how amazing would it be to trot about town this winter in one of these??

Pink Coats

Gianluca Capannolo pink coat / RED Valentino wool coat, $865 / Sartoria Italiana Vintage pleated wool coat / RED Valentino coat / Jigsaw leather coat, $395

A soft pink wool coat!  LOVE. And if Kate Beckensale is on board, I am too!

Amazing with grey, perfect to dress up jeans... Obviously fab with black and white, and the perfect femme touch for leather pants.

AND... if you weren't already sold it's a breath of fresh air among the black, grey, and brown colors of winter!  Don't you want to stand out??

Perhaps this will go on my Christmas wish list this year.....

The Comeback of the One Piece

Summer is coming to a close in most parts of the country, which means that it's back to school time for most families.  That's why September is one of my favorite times to vacation - all the kiddos are back in school, so the resorts and beaches have fewer tantrum throwing toddlers.  AMEN to that!! With vacation on the brain, let's talk about swimsuits, shall we?

While I still love a good bikini, I know I'm not the only one who has been on a vacation, chowing down on tacos and margaritas, and wishing for a little more... "coverage" in the tummy area.  Am I right??  I've spotted A LOT of really amazing options out there with retro cuts, figure flattering shapes, and deep plunging necklines...

I pulled together a few of my favorites:
One Pieces

Mink Pink one piece swimsuit, $115 / ASOS one piece swimsuit, $54 / La Blanca one piece swimsuit / ASOS one piece swimsuit, $44 / Zimmermann one piece swimsuit / Topshop one piece swimsuit / Lisa Marie Fernandez one piece swimsuit / Miraclesuit one piece swimsuit, $220 / Caffé Swimwear one piece swimsuit / Topshop one piece swimsuit / CHROMAT one piece swimsuit / Roksanda Ilincic one piece swimsuit / Melissa Odabash one piece swimsuit

I have so many favorites in this bunch, it's hard to narrow it down!!

I mean, the red and hot pink number is A-MA-ZING, and the color-blocked waist will visually shrink your middle.    The retro shapes are also so awesome - the strapless styles, that have a corseted look and feel are so "South Pacific".  The black with the white piping and the tropical top with the navy bottom is also adorable.

I actually ordered the navy plunge one-piece from ASOS, and hope it fits!  (never know with European sizing...)

So what do you think?? Would you rock a one-piece on your next vacation, or stick with the bikini??

Summer Rompers

I've never felt that I could successfully pull off a romper, but after seeing a few girls wear them last weekend in Napa, I really want one of my own.  There is just something about a girl who wears a romper that says "cool factor"... although I realize saying "cool factor" makes me sound like kind of the opposite... I never was too cool.

Anyways... how cute are these??

Rompers

Rompers by beckyc1923 featuring a jump suit

Lanvin / MaxMara jump suit, $530 / RED Valentino , $355 / Dorothy Perkins / Forever 21 romper

I pulled together a few of my favorites here, and I think each has it's different purpose - clockwise from the far left there's the work appropriate pants version, the sexy cut out version perfect for Miami or Vegas, the relaxed aztec print version, the dressy black lace version, the floaty feminine version, and the pretty ladylike version.

The reason I've never seriously attempted one myself is because I have a long torso, and the last thing I want to do is look like I'm trying to squeeze into kids clothing, BUT what I've found is that by following a few rules, just about anyone can pull one off...

1.  Make sure that it's long enough
Not only do the shorts have to be long enough, but the body has to be long enough too otherwise it will ride up, and make for possibly the most unflattering outfit.  Ever.  EVER.

2.  Make sure they nip in at the waist
If you are wearing a romper that's too baggy, you'll look dumpy - for lack of a better word.  Belt it, cinch it, do whatever you have to, but be sure your waist is defined.

3.  Make sure the shorts (or pants) are loose and pull away from your legs
This rule also applies to wearing shorts, and there is nothing less flattering than shorts that are too tight around your legs.  Period.

Andddd, I'm off to do a little online shopping... I need to find me a romper!

Leopard Print Flats

You guys!  I'm SO sad!  My beloved leopard print flats that I pretty much wear every. single. day. are on their last legs.  You can't really tell from this picture, but after two years of constant wear, they are literally ripping at the seams!  So sad!

These are the Sam Edelman "Beatrix" flat in "Nude Leopard".  I love the black cap toe with the jagged burrs... they make them now with a gold toe, but I am NOT a fan of how the gold looks... bring back the black!!!

I've searched high and low - Nordstroms, Bloomingdales, Amazon, eBay,  Zappos... even random sites (there was one called "Shoe Bunnies"... no I'm not kidding)... and I literally cannot find the same ones!  It's very upsetting!

I've finally resigned myself to the fact that I will not be able to find the exact same shoes as a replacement for my current leopard beauties, so I'll have to look at some alternatives.  I rounded up a list of potentials here, and plan to do a little more hunting before fully committing.  In my opinion, leopard ballet flats are THE MOST versatile shoe. I wear them like a neutral, so they get worn with everything!  EVERYTHING.

What do you think about these options??

STELLA McCARTNEY leopard flat / Pretty Ballerinas leopard flat / Giambattista Valli canvas espadrille / Pointed toe flat / Minnetonka flat shoes / H&M ballet flat, $23

Of course I like the most expensive version (Stella McCartney) best... why oh why?!

Cabo Packing List: Inspiration to Reality

Yesterday I posted the inspiration behind my Cabo packing list, and here is a little glimpse of how that inspiration is translating...

Lots of bright colors and fun jewelry... aye-aye-ayeeeee!!

One more day and I'll be beachside... HOWEVER, I've got a few fun posts lined up for the rest of the week!

I'll be back on Monday, relaxed, refreshed, and hopefully not burned like a lobster!

Adios!

Cabo Must Have's

In less than 72 hours, I'll be laying in my beach chair, sipping an icy margarita, and listening to the waves crash on the beach in Cabo.

A few girlfriends and myself booked a quick trip to Cabo for a quick escape from city life.  I plan to come back very tan, and very relaxed, but today and tomorrow is all about packing my bags for our trip south of the border. When I think mexico, I think beachy hair, bikinis, and bright colors, and this list covers my essentials for this little getaway...
Cabo

Cabo by beckyc1923 featuring a fuchsia dress

Sass & Bide multicolor dress, $380 / Victoria's Secret victoria secret / Colorful maxi dress / Fuchsia dress / Victoria's Secret victoria secret / Jimmy Choo strap high heels / Sigerson Morrison heel wedge / Nine West heels / Sam & Libby shoes / Michael Kors tote bag / BaubleBar orange bib necklace / H&M plastic bracelet, $4.51 / Rachel Zoe

Possibly the most essential item to pack on a tropical vacation is your swimsuit.  I'll be spending about 70% of my day in one, and I'm all about the bandeau style bikini.  It's especially great for the first few days to avoid tan-lines from a triangle top.  I also could not leave without a big floppy hat - the sun is STRONG and we want to avoid wrinkles at all costs.

I love everything about a maxi dress, and I plan on bringing a few - they are so pretty blowing in the breeze, and they are equally comfy as they are feminine.  They are usually not super tight around the mid-section which means, bring on the tacos!  I won't be holding back!  I'm all about the aztec prints out in stores right now, and these are so perfect for a trip to Baja.  I love the blouse-y short number almost as much as I love the black white and yellow bandage dress!

Comfy footwear is important too - especially with cobblestone pathways, and sand everywhere. I'll most likely spend most of my time in a comfy pair of gladiators, but it's nice to have a few sassy options for a night out on the town - bright striped espadrilles, brown laser cut wedges, and these yellow Jimmy Choo's are on my dream wish list for sure.  How amazing are they???

Accessories make an outfit, so I plan on packing a few bold statement necklaces and fun bracelets, and I wouldn't dare go on a beach vacation without a big sturdy tote to drag all my magazines, and sunscreen to the pool.

Just making this list made me sooo excited!  Off to pack!

Summer Colors

I'm soooo obsessed with this color palatte...

Also, that Hermes scarf is to. die. for.  Just had to get that out there.

With this warm weather, my trip to Miami next week, and my girls trip to Cabo at the end of the month, my eye is drawn to everything that says "summer" and I'm pretty sure that hot pink and orange say just that.

If you want to bring just a bit of these bold colors into your home, use these rooms as inspiration:
Sources Clockwise from top left: #1#2#3#4

Incorporate the colors of summer through a bright floral arrangement, a vibrant book strategically placed on an entry table, or a happy hued throw blanket, pillow, or a garden stool.  Totally temporary, but these small updates instantly say "it's not winter anymore" to guests.

If you are feeling a little more gung-ho over seasonal decor, go all out and incorporate these happy summer colors into your home in bolder ways...

Bright happy bedding will ensure you wake up ready to seize the day, and hot pink dining room chairs wake up the senses at meal time.  If you are feeling gutsy, paint the back of a bookshelf tangerine, or if you are REALLY feeling bold, paint the whole room!

By the way, how cute are those bucket seats around the kitchen table??  On the heels of my Ikea Chair Hack post from the other day, a can of hot pink spray paint could easily transform any of those Ikea options for minimal cost...  just sayin!

For the fashion minded, I say it's time to start bringing the brights into your wardrobe!

Who could forget that amazing Halston dress from the Sex and the City II movie??  Oh if only it were mine!  A full skirt and structured top stay grounded for cooler spring days with black accessories, but couldn't you imagine this with nude heels and a cute raffia clutch for a summer wedding??

And if head to toe isn't your thing, these colors would wake up any neutral outfit through accessories!  My cousin would always say, "Accessories MAKE the outfit"... and she is SO RIGHT!

So what do you think??  How will you be incorporating tangerine and shocking bright pink into your life this summer?

Cropped

Happy Friday everyone!!  After work, I'm going to treat myself to a little shopping downtown, so I've decided to dedicate this post to my favorite new look... the cropped trouser.  I'm all about it right now.

I swear to you, this is the most universally flattering pant - regardless of your height, it just works.

We're not talking about capri pants people.  We're talking about a straight leg, ankle length pant.  Form fitting, and tailored, but not tight.  It almost has to flare out just slightly from the calf, and then it's perfection.  I love wearing these pants on weekends, as well as to work.  I feel pulled together, and stylish, but it takes no effort, or thought in the morning!  My favorite pair is actually from  Banana Republic, but Vince Camuto has another super cute pair that I love.

Want to test this look?  Here's a little inspiration to take you into the weekend!

Valentine's Day Gifts... for her

Valentine's Day is upon us, and if you are looking for a little last minute inspiration of what to get your sweetheart (or better yet, what to treat yourself to) I've pulled together a short list of things I'd love!

Nothing over the top, but pretty little somethings to add a little spring to your step.

Poppy colored Skirt - nobody does preppy like Banana Republic.  I actually treated myself to this skirt yesterday, and aside from being the perfect length for work, the pleats are ultra flattering!

Pink Leather Handbag - hello ladylike.  You could wear this bowler as a crossbody bag, or use the handles for the ultimate ladylike look.

Pretty Lace-trimmed Nighty - how cute is this with the black and white stripes, and the little bit of pink?!

Pave Chain-link Bracelet - yep, this bracelet will pretty much top my list for any occasion... I am still in love!

Lacquer Bangle - a fun addition to your outfit on a gloomy February day.

Leopard Clutch - I am LOVING animal print now, more than ever - wear this as a neutral!  I swear it goes with everything you own!

Pink Clarisonic - I have the blue one, and it's amazing.  Treat yourself (or your girlfriend)... it's worth every penny.

Bouquet of Peonies - because these are the most romantic flower out there...

Coral Studs - for a little something sparkly...

J'adore Peplum

Ok people - I mentioned last year how I LOVE peplum.  Not just LOVE but LOOOOVVVVVEEEEE.

It's been an ongoing love affair for me, and I couldn't be happier now that I've seen it blowing up everywhere.  It's lady-like, flattering, and totally on trend right now.  I've found myself wearing peplum to work, to brunch, and to go out with girlfriends.  It seriously is the best comeback since leggings (um stretchy pants are back from my childhood??  HELL yeah!)

Need some inspiration??  Well even if you don't, I'm going to give it to you... here we go!

PEPLUM TAKES YOU FROM WORK TO PLAY:
Day to Night Peplum

Mango ribbed shirt / Blue top, $24 / HUGO high waisted skirt / Schutz pointed toe pumps, $200 / Kate Spade leather handbag / Kate Spade handcrafted jewelry / Gorjana

Need to head into the office, but don't have time to go home and change before going out to nice dinner or happy hour?  Presto chango - take off the cardigan, add a snazzy necklace and you are set!

Kate Spade is the queen of the ladylike bag, and this one is large enough to carry your wallet, car keys, rolled up cardigan, and a pair of ballet flats (for the walk home) but it's not so big as to be obnoxious at a crowded bar scene.

Nude heels?  Classy enough for work, sexy enough to play... and can you really say no to something that makes your legs look longer??  Me either.  Plus that capped toe?  Fierce.

PEPLUM GETS FUNKY:
Modernized Peplum

MSGM lace tank / Mango bike pants, $44 / Givenchy leather boots / Cross body handbag / Bangle bracelet, $140 / McQ by Alexander McQueen wrap bracelet, $110 / Fantasy Jewelry Box chain bracelet / Viva La Diva lip makeup, $14

Not every look with peplum has to channel Mad Men - updating this silhouette with bright colors, or interesting materials makes it modern, and edgy.  Neon yellow anyone??

I love this with leather leggings, and sexy strappy caged booties.  Bracelets upon bracelets are all you need - you do not want a big necklace to compete with this top - and sexy Bardot inspired makeup would be so perfect - big eyelashes and pale lips.

The hair should be big and voluminous and I love the idea of another bright accessory (to avoid looking like a bumblebee in all that yellow and black).  Purple and yellow are opposites, and they always look fabulous together.

PEPLUM GOES CASUAL:
Daytime Peplum

Forever New cut out shirt, $31 / Madewell cotton jacket / J.Crew j crew / Tory Burch genuine leather handbag / American Apparel leather strap watch

Nope - I'm not insane.  Yes, it's January, but with sunny weather here in California that is close to 70 degrees, I couldn't help myself!  For those of you freezing your tootsies off somewhere on the East Coast, put this one in the back pocket for this summer, when I'm here bundled up in the fog!

Nautical stripes, and yellow pants scream preppy, which I love, loooveeee, LOOVEEEEE.  These leopard loafers are comfy, and stylish.  Need I say more?  Grab the jean jacket that literally goes with everything, and a side slung brown leather bag, and you are set for anything - shopping, lunching, brunching, wine tasting, or just kicking back with a good book.

Jump on the peplum train y'all - I promise you won't look back!

The Little Black Coat

Brrrrr!!  It is SO COLD on this Monday morning.  As I shivered on my walk into the office, I decided I NEEDED to dedicate my post today to functional AND fashionable coats.

Everyone loves the "little black dress" because it goes anywhere - from the office to dinner or wherever else!  I feel the same way about the little black coat.  Always chic, totally fashionable, and you'll be warm - even on the coldest days!

I am totally in love with this Burberry coat from the above inspiration - I mean, aren't we all??  The belted waist .. the wide lapels... I'm in love.  It's fabulous to be sure, but totally NOT in my budget.  Wah!

Loving this look, I pulled some little black coat inspiration together for you all - which do you like best?
Black Coats

Coat / Coast wool coat, $310 / Tweed coat / Double breasted coat / Ted Baker trench coat, $360 / Karen Millen

I love the classic lines of the double breasted wool trench on the left - it's no frills but the belted waist keeps it super feminine and tailored.  The second two on the top row, involve faux fur... which you KNOW I am all about right now... it just takes it up a notch, don't you think??

On the bottom row, how fun and flirty is the flouncy skirt on the coat to the far left?  Or the belted cape in the middle?!  Adorable, and so easy to throw on with jeans!  And finally, the asymmetrical collar on the final coat is so Charlotte from SATC. LOVE!!

BRRRRRRRR... I've got the heater cranked up, and a hot tea warming me up slowly.  Have a happy Monday!!!

Spring Florals

Adorable right??

Yeah, I think so too.  I found this look on Pinterest (where else) and fell kind of in love.  I am trying to put together looks from my own closet that mimic this sweet look as the weather has turned absolutely spring-like.

This first outfit will be better for the cooler more wintery days, when floral just feels necessary despite the weather.  The muted colors feel more "winter" than "summer", so you won't get those "are you freaking crazy" looks from strangers on the street.  Also, a thick trench and booties are still "practical" for January / February, so even though you're dressed for cooler weather, you'll still feel ready for spring.

Winter Florals

Dolce & Gabbana long sleeve blouse, $635 / Wool trench coat / Emilio De La Morena flare skirt, $365 / ASOS studded high heels / Forever New , $74

And this second look is perfect for those rare, sunny warm days, when you have a fresh spray tan, and are ready to show off those legs!  Amen sister!

Speaking of showing legs... must I really MUST start doing squats again...

Spring Floral

Equipment silk shirt / Vero Moda , $18 / Pull&Bear high heel, $95 / Leather handbag / Nouv-Elle pendant jewelry, $45

Happy (almost) spring!!

Wildfox + Clueless = Love

Have you heard of WildFox?  If you haven't you'll sure start noticing them more!  Large retailers like Nordstroms, Bloomingdales, and ShopBop all cary Wildfox clothing, but what I am obsessed with is their new Clueless inspired Collection.

Any of you ladies who grew up in the Clueless era know EXACTLY what I am talking about.

Sixth grade was pretty much a blur of saying what-evverrrrrr with my fingers in the "W" sign, and everyday, I made sure to show up to school wearing a short mini skirt, cropped baby t-shirts, and knee-highs.  My mom was at her wits end with the two little strands of hair I'd pull down next to my face in an effort to look JUST LIKE Cher.

OMG, I wanted a white jeep like that SO BAD!

Do these ads bring you back or what???

I can literally hear myself saying As If with as much attitude as my 12 year old self could muster.

OMG amazing... Can you tell, I'm still a little bit obsessed??

Outside of my clueless obsession, these clothes are a fabulous modern take on what has already been popular.  Don't get me wrong, you aren't going to find me trotting around town in knee highs again (some things are better left in the past), but that yellow blazer?? Those cute striped shorts??  That itty bitty sexy red dress??

All amazing!!

Check out their Facebook page here or their site with the rest of their collections here!!

Heart Gloves

This is such a random thought, but aren't these just the sweetest gloves??

Yastikizi's Etsy Shop is full of handmade warm, cozy, nostalgic knit goods, and these gloves would make such a perfect gift!

I could imagine little girls running around with these, as easily as I could imagine myself rocking them on cold days (and nights)!

They also have versions with the finger tips cut off (convenient for texting - of course), and they come wrapped up with yarn, in these adorable bundles!

I heart them!
