Heaven is... a Spacious Chef's Kitchen

I wish I had a picture of how teeny our SF kitchen is.  Let me paint the picture - its roughly 5'x5' and has two itty bitty countertops on either side of the farmhouse sink (can I just add, the sink is the one kind of awesome thing in the space!)  Naturally, we do not have a dishwasher (Kris calls me his dishwasher... sooo not funny), so one of the two small counter-tops is consumed by a dish drainer.  This leaves me about one square foot to prepare food - not exaggerating at all.  To say that cooking ANYTHING in this kitchen is difficult is an understatement.

To add to this tragedy, I happen to love to cook, so I find myself constantly day-dreaming of hosting fabulous dinner parties, and hanging out with friends and family in a beautiful, spacious kitchen.

Can we talk about the tin ceiling tiles above the TWIN ISLANDS?!  This must be how starving children in Africa would feel if they saw a photo of a Las Vegas Buffet.  I don't even know what I'd do with all this counter-space!  You could teach cooking classes here!  You could start a bakery here!!  The tiles bring some old school glamour - it reminds me of some of the turn-of-the-century hotels in San Francisco - but the installation of modern glass lights makes it fresh and contemporary.  LOVE.

Hello, future kitchen.
Your Total Renovation
Wow - between the panelled ceiling, the grand fireplace, and the contrast between detailed white cabinets and glossy black counter-tops, this kitchen is both dramatic and cozy.  The floor to ceiling windows don't hurt either :-)

great kitchen...

To me, this is farmhouse kitchen meets French Chateau.  The details on the cabinets keep it quaint while the huge arched window, intricate chandelier, and ginormous hood range create multiple focal points for the room.  I'm also loving the white marble backsplash - all the white coupled with the vaulted ceiling keeps it feeling airy even though this space isn't super expansive!

Bight and airy kitchen

More black and white - I'm sensing a theme here! In kitchens, and in all rooms, I'm a huge fan of keeping things simple and neutral.  This room doesn't look boring because of the small details - the hood on the range, the lantern, and the fresh flowers.  These are the things you can more easily change, but be sure you don't commit to a trend that will easily go out of style.  Kitchen appliances are pricey, so don't throw your money away on a quaint country fruit themed back-splash (a popular look in the '90's).  Go for a look that has been popular in the past and present - timeless wins every time.

light, spacious, beautiful kitchen
Un-named Source
I hate not being able to track photo's back to their original sources, but this kitchen was too lovely to leave out!  I love the idea of a dine in kitchen - people congregate in here for parties and dinner anyways, so having the table in the kitchen is so functional - it provides seating, and allows people to linger, long after the meal is finished.  When Kris and I start a family (and buy a home) I absolutely want to be sure that we have a large dining area in the kitchen.  I picture our kids doing homework there while I cook dinner.  A girl can dream, right?

spacious white kitchen, i love!

Again, a smaller space in the scheme of my imaginary kitchen, but between the globe light fixtures, the nail-head trim on those chairs, and the gradated tile, I know this is a look that Kris would love as much as I do.  It's modern without being "modern".  It has just enough classic charm to keep it soft.

Will You be my Bridesmaid?

I am not engaged, but I am shamelessly obsessed with weddings - I know it, my parents know it, and Kris knows it.  (To add on to my Valentine's Day love note to him... I love him because he sees how crazy I am for everything bridal, and he a) isn't scared off b) doesn't judge me c) thinks it's sweet and endearing)

To that end, I saw the most adorable, creative way to ask your girlfriend's to be a part of your wedding.  This "Will you be my Bridesmaid" box was originally featured on The Wedding Chicks whose awesome creativity inspires me daily.

I am TOTALLY going to do this when I am engaged, so I pray my best friends do not read this.  Here is the tutorial on how to create a super personal, super sweet, "will you be my bridesmaid" box:

Step 1: Buy cigar boxes from JoAnn's ($4.99 online)
These are extremely inexpensive, but there is some labor involved so if you are thinking of having more than 5 bridesmaids, this could start getting quite labor intensive...
Step 2: Remove hardware, lightly sand, and paint box the colors of your choice.
Here, they used Sweet Cream and Blue Bahama.  I love this color combo since I always think of the saying "Something Old, Something New, Something borrowed, Something Blue" but this would look equally lovely with earth tones (creme and taupe) or girly hues (creme and peach) or if that's not your thing, go wild with bright colors.  Heck, its your wedding! I am not quite as artistically inclined, so for the cute scalloped detail inside, I will most definitely be using the stencil provided here.

Here, the "be my maid" is done with calligraphic adhesive letters - these are available at any craft store (Joann, Michael's, etc.)  They encourage two coats of satin varnish over everything to protect and finish the look.  How essential is this? I'm not sure, but since you are putting in the work, you might as well put in the extra few minutes so it looks "finished."

Step 3: Get the inside of the box looking as pretty as the outside
Here the box is lined with a vintage handkerchief, but you can use graphic fabric, lace... whatever you think is pretty.

Step 4: Get to work on the contents of the box
To lay out the details of the wedding, the bride-to-be created progressively longer postcard messages - one to outline the day, their role, the other girls and the dresses.  By making each note card longer than the last, the bride was able to cut and bundle the scalloped cards into a sweet stack.

You don't have to copy her notes word for word, but this is a good guideline for what to include:

Our Day:
Gabe and I are getting hitched! Our wedding will be small, about 50 guests, but I promise you, we’re still bringing the funk! (in a fun way).  We’ve rented out the vineyard’s three houses from June 27 – July 1 and reserved your space for our bridal party (plus your hubby or guest). You can stay as long as you want without worrying about a hotel
t
My Girls:
Let’s hope you all say yes or this could get awkward.

Becky: matron of honor – best friend extraordinaire, keeper of my most embarrassing stories, most likely to stop the ceremony to save a butterfly.
Dana: bridesmaid – amazeballs sister, logical ying to my emotional yang, most likely to call foul if I go bridezilla, ironically also most likely to cry a lot
Andrea: bridesmaid – kindergarten homie of two decades, witness to my most tragic hair years, most likely to bring me to tears by saying something ultra sweet and sentimental
t
Your Role:
I hear weddings can become a lot of work for bridesmaids.  Please don’t worry about showers or bachelorette parties, gifts or anything like that.  Your presence on my wedding day is all I need, truly.
As my bridesmaid, your only job is to feel beautiful, hold some gorgeous flowers, wipe away my happy tears, understand how much your presence is appreciated, and know how much I love you.
Basically you’re to have a complete blast, and maybe challenge me to a cake eating contest.

t
Your Dresses:
More than anything, I want each of you to feel comfy and gorgeous! You are all beautiful in so many ways – what you wear should reflect it.
And who’s better suited to pick out your dress than you? Each of you will pick a dress that says “you” – I’m onboard for an eclectic mix of dresses if it means my best girls will feel fabulous.  Enclosed you’ll find a few paint chips to give you a feel for the colors I dig.  Dreamy aquas and blues.  Any shade within that color family will work for me.  I’ve included a few sample photos just to get your wheels spinning about styles but your options are pretty limitless – just a few guidelines to use while shopping:
   - Keep it short, around knee length, give or take a few inches
   - Go sleeveless – you have the right to bear arm
   - Try for vintage inspired look for feminine details like flirty lace, or a retro silhouette, anything that makes it sweet and breezy.
Also, we know that traveling to and being a part of weddings can add up, so Gabe and I would love to pick up the cost of your dress.  I’ve enclosed a gift card for $150 towards your dress and accessories – if you have any trouble using it, please let me know.
I’m still fence sitting on accessories and shoes, but will be sure to keep you informed!

Step 5: Get to work on the contents of the box
To complete the boxes, put photos for inspiration (inspiration for the dresses as well as the overall look and feel of the day), and paint chips as a guideline to the color scheme.  I hate to add this in, but I must - if you have a friend that is known to be overtly sexy, over-the-top, or has a "I'll do what I want" attitude, I would take special care to emphasize the look you are going for if a ton of cleavage or mini dresses don't fit in the vision you have for your wedding day.

So that's it!  (that's "it"... ha) - it is a lot of work, but what a special way to ask your bridesmaids to be a part of your big day. LOVE

Heaven is... a HUGE Walk in Closet

I am officially in la la land today, daydreaming the day away - our bedroom is currently in shambles, my clothes residing in cardboard boxes while I refinish my armoire.  The closet is deep, so holds two full racks of clothes, but because one rack is directly behind the other, I can really only see half my wardrobe!  First world problems? Yes.  But, I'm allowed to be a little self indulgent as a girl who is literally living out of a box.  I would give my right arm for one of these dreamy dressing rooms where all my clothes were color categorized, all my bags on display, and all my shoes out in the open to admire.  As a visual person, I think this would be not only a total luxury, but totally useful!  I'd actually end up wearing more of my clothes that are currently hanging forgotten in the back of my closet on my "tier two" rack!  Maybe Kris is onto something with his hankerings to move to the suburbs...

Enjoy the dreamy gallery of walk-ins below!

Indoor / Outdoor Living

I'm not sure if it's the chilly weather, or if I've been feeling cooped up in our small cozy apartment, but lately, I've found myself day-dreaming about gorgeous indoor / outdoor living spaces.  I envision sitting out late drinking wine and chatting by the fire, cookouts, warm nights, and fuzzy fleece blankets for when summer turns to fall.

I love our little life in San Francisco, but look at these gorgeous spaces.  I am definitely making a mental note for when Kris and I do buy a house and settle down in the suburbs.  How amazing are some of these?!

Sweet Wedding Phototography

Photo courtesy of Style Me Pretty

Today I am in a day-dreamy sort of place, where all I want to do is think about weddings.  Isn't this just the sweetest wedding photo?  My parents got married on a rainy day in April, and have been married for 37 years.  The Chinese believe that rain is a sign of luck on your wedding.  And I personally think that a photo of a couple under an umbrella is so sweet - a quiet moment snuggled close, with the quiet rain falling around you.

Love.

Who says rain on your wedding day is a bad thing?!

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel: NEED, not want

One of my more recent obsessions revolves around getting a puppy.  Not yet any puppy, a Cavelier King Charles Spaniel.  The conversation goes something like this:

Me: "Oh my god, honey, look at that dog!!  Soo cute!!"
Kris: "Yeah, it's cute"
Me: "Oh my gosh, I NEED that dog in my life - can you imagine how much fun we'd have taking it on long walks, teaching it tricks, and snuggling with it on the couch?"
Kris: "Pretty cute. I'm hungry, where do you want to eat?"
Me: "No but really, I feel like our lives would be so complete with a dog.  And my office is dog friendly - I could bring it to work so it wouldn't be home alone!"
Kris: "A dog is a huge responsibility outside of the obvious fact that our building doesn't allow dogs"
Me: "That is such a minor detail - our landlord loves me"

And so on... and so on...

I mean, LOOK that that little face!  What a muffin!!  I will slowly but surely wear Kris down... if only I can get our names on a few waiting lists, he will cave!

Holiday Inspiration

I am a secret shopaholic, and now that Halloween is past us, it seems that everyone is gearing up for the holidays.  I received roughly 30 emails today about sales, holiday trends, and festive accessories that really got me thinking.  Not that I have plans for new years, but isn't this the most darling outfit to ring in the new year??

1. Tuxedo Jacket BCBG via ShopStyle

2. ADORABLE sparkly cocktail dress Adrianna Papell for Nordstrom
3. Disco ball drop earrings - VERY Times Square ball drop, Kate Spade
4. How cute is this "box of chocolates" clutch, Kate Spade
5. Chocolate gems to match the purse, another Kate Spade winner
6. Strappy sandles with a gladiator twist sex everything up, Bloomingdales

CGPP

In the last year, my sister got married, and with that came a whirlwind of events that we needed to put together and host.  With a limited budget, my sister went against conformity, and did NOT enlist the help of a wedding planner.  Instead she focused on what she wanted the most - good food, open bar, and beautiful florals.  Without a planner orchestrating everything, my mom and I rolled up our sleeves and got to work sharpening our flower arranging skills and frosting expertise.

All the planning was so fun, and my mom and I have even thrown around the idea of opening our own party planning company together.  Not only is this the stuff we love (flowers, food, and of course drinking), but I have to say, we are pretty good at it!   It's still such a fantasy, but one day that would be pretty amazing.  My mom simply refers to us as "CGPP" - Christensen Girls Party Planning.  It's so cute - I kind of love the idea!! I think the name needs some work in the grand scheme, but I would have so much fun, arranging flowers, setting up appointments, and orchestrating large scale events like weddings, showers, and even posh get-togethers. Oh to dream....

Is this the one?!

As I mentioned, Kris and I have been apartment hunting for the past few months.  To cut the story short, it has been an extremely frustrating process.  Rent is at an all time high, and there are very few options right now... BUT... tonight we went to see an apartment, and I think this could be it!!

I can feel myself getting my hopes up, so I really need to take it down a few notches, but I left the apartment feeling so excited, I could barely contain it!  Kris just kept laughing at me - you'd swear I won the lottery.

I can just imagine how lovely this new home is going to be - the living room has tall floor to ceiling windows, and the whole unit gets a lot of light.  We can have dinner parties in our formal dining room, movie nights in the expansive living room, and order in because the kitchen is VERY small.

While we don't have it yet, I have already started dreaming about the nesting... I can't wait until the suspense is over and we can plan out our new apartment together.  Kris likes modern and I like more classic, so I think we can find an easy balance with what I am going to call... contemporary classic.

For fuel I headed over to House Beautiful - the epitome (I feel) of contemporary classic.  Some of the homes and rooms are a bit too fashion-y for me, but this magazine truly inspires me to experiment with more colors, fabrics, and textures to create something really interesting... I want practical meets stunning.  Kris wants what I want
